How to Update Old Content

Perhaps you’ve been blogging a while and beginning to think some of your posts are outdated. What should you do?

It’s always best to have as much evergreen content as possible on your blog/website. Today, I’m going to give you several tips for updating old content.

But first, Why should you update old content?

5 Reasons to update old content:

  1. The first goal, always should be to serve our readers. If the post contains outdated information, it should be updated to better serve them. Who wants to read stuff that no longer applies, right? It’s been documented that you will also have a better click through rate on Google when the snippet description shows a recent date.
  2. You’ve changed your opinion or your preference in regards to the topic, or there is new information about a topic and you need to share it and/or link to it to keep your readers up to date.
  3. There are typos or grammatical errors. Please update asap!
  4. The post is no longer relevant and you want to completely re-write it to support your blog’s current focus.
  5. Google likes it when you update old content. When the bots crawl your site next time and realize that you’ve updated the information it can give you a boost in your Google rankings.

How to update old content

  1. Update the image as needed and link pinnable image to the post, or to the main list post of the series
  2. Add keywords to image title and image alt tag
  3. Make the image description keyword rich
  4. Be sure the featured image is the updated image
  5. If there are products in the post, check the link to be sure it goes to the current product landing page
  6. If there are not products in the post check to see if you can include links to products or affiliate links
  7. If there are affiliate links in the post, be sure the disclosure notice or image is in the post prior to the link and that the disclosure image links to the disclosure page
  8. Interlink naturally with other posts if possible, both onsite and off - if you know of another great article that is relevant to link to. Google gives higher ranking to a post that is several years old if an authority site is linking to it, so look for great sites and new posts to link to.
  9. Choose only ONE category
  10. Choose category as first tag, plus 2-3 other relevant tags. For more on this, see this video
  11. Check to be sure there is a strong call to action - what do we want them to do next? (click to read this, comment, see a product, etc.)
  12. Check Yoast description and snippet, edit as necessary
  13. Check Yoast info for a green light, edit as necessary - the goal is not just to get a green light but to get as many green lights as possible, so keep tweaking until you’ve done all possible
  14. Change the date and republish, DO NOT CHANGE THE URL or it will break any links already shared around. If the URL is different, it is now a “new post” to Google, not an “updated” one.
  15. Add the updated post to your social media schedule and email list again.
